Thanksgiving Food

October 23, 2006

-

Even more than turkey and mashed potatoes and stuffing, I’m looking
forward to the potato cakes the next morning. Not potato pancakes, not
latkes, but potato cakes made of leftover mashed potatoes. Has anyone
here heard of these? I think they are a backwoods West Virginia
specialty, I’ve never met anyone who has ever heard of them. But they
are divine. They are a morning-after-holiday tradition in my family, as
they must be made from leftover mashed potatoes because they must be
cold enough that you can slice them like a meatloaf, dip them in flour,
and fry ‘em up until they are crispy on the outside and soft and gooey
on the inside. Serve with bacon and eggs in place of hash browns or
fried potatoes. Yum. Try it Friday morning!

#39 – Ethnic Strip Mall Eats

October 19, 2006

1018 001.jpg
Believe it or not, suburban strip malls are increasingly the place to find cheap, good ethnic food. Within a 5-minute drive of my house I have Afghan, Cuban, Peruvian, Brazilian, Indian, Greek, Italian, Vietnamese, Thai, tons of Mexican and tons of Chinese. All in strip malls, some nestled right in with the chains we have come to expect of suburbia, like Outback, Macaroni Grill, and Applebees. But most of them are in nowhere strip malls like the one pictured–cheap rent in a bad location with little traffic and a bunch of questionable stores for neighbors. It’s the suburban equivalent of a ghetto.

Not a good slice of pizza to be had for miles and miles, though.

UPDATE: A blog has been keeping track of the Washington area’s strip mall ethnic eats. Scroll down for his pics.
UPDATE 2: There’s actually an interesting Washington Post article on the subject as well.

…the good ethnic restaurants downtown are either trendy (think Rasika and Indique, both of which reinterpret Indian for upmarket American eaters), or cater to the wealthy international crowd (such as the Spanish Taberna del Alabardero near the International Monetary Fund and World Bank). For the best buys, though, you have to get in the car and head out to the sprawl. These days, the most authentic, spiciest food comes at cheap, ugly strip malls, far from the District and miles from the Metro.

Those Crazy Brits

October 4, 2005

The White Hen in Porter Square has a strangely large selection of British chocolates and biscuits.

WTF?

Since I am a badass I bought it anyway. I hope I don’t grow testicles. I must say it is crappy chocolate, like a waxy easter bunny. But perhaps I just lack the chromosome to appreciate it.

Secret Somerville Take-Out

May 1, 2005

I would like to make all my Davis/Porter Sqare neighbors aware of my
favorite little Thai take-out joint that no one knows about: Thai Kitchen,
at 2261 Mass. Ave, the corner of Dover and Mass Ave. It’s a tiny little
hole in the wall with about 4 tables and when you walk in it feels like
you’re walking in to someone’s living room. I usually just get
take-out. But the food is always super-good and the veggies super-fresh
and the staff is super-nice and the place is super-empty. I’ve never
seen anyone sitting in there. That is a lie actually, because I went
today and there was one guy sitting there. He may have been a waiter
though, I’m not sure. Anyway you should all try it, it’s great and I
wouldn’t want them to go out of business.

There is also a Bengladeshi place nextdoor called Bengal Cafe, which is
new, and which is even emptier and I have never once seen anyone in
there, and that’s not a lie. The only person I see in there when I walk
by is a very sad-looking man behind the counter. So I plan to try it at
some point, and you should too, and if you do, report back to me to let
me know if it’s any good. I guess it’s not a good location for a
restaurant–not a lot of foot traffic out at that end of Mass Ave.
Though there is a little Middle Eastern sandwich/coffee shop on the
other corner that always seems to have people inside. *shrug*

Cynthia’s Quick And Easy Mex-American Poached Eggs

March 16, 2005

(alternate title: Fake Huevos Rancheros)

1-2 eggs
1 spicy black bean burger patty
3-4 tbsp salsa
dollop of sour cream

Boil a pot of water. Drop in the eggs. While boiling, heat up the bean
patty in the microwave (or toaster oven if you prefer). Boil the eggs
for about 3 minutes, then fish them out with a slotted spoon and lay
them on the bean patty. Top with salsa and sour cream. Enjoy!

Let Me Sleep

December 16, 2004

I can’t sleep and I have a big meeting tomorrow morning and I’m anxious so I’m sitting here sipping some Kava tea. I hope to be knocked on my ass shortly.

My repetitive stress wrist-hand-thumb-shoulder pain is back too, so
posting may be light for awhile. After I get to sleep, that is.

I have been researching nutrients and am now concerned that I’m not
getting enough iron. I bought a load of expensive vitamins at Harnett’s
but have been doing research and did you know how hard it is to get
enough iron into your system? They say most women only get 67% of their
RDA of iron. It is a very tricky mineral. Take it with oatmeal, as I
did this morning, and you might as well be flushing it straight down
the toilet. It is a finicky metal, and if you eat it with certain foods
it won’t get absorbed. Grains are one. So is milk, spinach, eggs, soy,
tea, coffee. And if you take it with calcium, forget it, it won’t work.
And iron from plant sources is even more finicky. Perhaps I’ll just
suck on my cast-iron pot for a few hours each day.

Back to the Drawing Board

December 10, 2004

Holy carrot cake! I stepped on the scale this morning and got quite a shock. There will be no more cupcakes for awhile…
